Everyone needs a social media detox from time to time, even a Social Media Coach and Consultant. Trust me I surprised the f' out of myself when I proclaimed, "I am going on a social media detox!" See a tinny tiny clip of me freaking out my IG stories below. I wanted to make my detox legit, so I declared it on Instagram Live, Instagram Stories and posted about it to set my intention and ask people to hold me accountable. I assumed that it would be tough for me to do, but in that moment, so necessary for my well being. Why? You ask?
Where do I begin? I love social media so much; I love the power that it has and the magic that it holds. Social media can create oneness and unity when used in a positive and impactful way. But, to be honest, I just felt the pressure to build my numbers, have Social Media Coach worthy engagement and to be #onpoint all the time. I mean all. the. time. My engagement was dropping, and my number of followers wasn't growing as fast as it had in the past. There are many reasons for this. I stopped following people back unless they liked at least four of my posts and commented. I also stopped going through my newsfeed and hashtags, which brings a lot of traffic back to a post. And, I might even go as far as unfollowing a bunch of people who do not engage at all with my account really soon. Let's be real; I want people who are going to buy my book, hire me as their Social Media Coach and basically, engage with me. The time I dedicated to social media was keeping me from working on my book, writing my blog and other things that fill me up like meditation, reading, and yoga.
So on Tuesday, I said I would start my detox and come back Saturday. Guys, it's Friday, and I did it! I pretty much did it. It wasn't that tough! I had one little relapse, but I had a good excuse! I swear! ( I was supporting a Spirit Junkie sister in our "just say no to sugar" group. ) These past few days have felt liberating! Although I did still maintain my client's accounts, I stayed off my account 99.9% of the time. I was able to finish the first round of edits on my book, Came to Believe (get on the waitlist here) and send it off to my editor. (Omg Omg, It's happening!) I started a new kundalini meditation, Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung. It is a healing meditation to bring healing energy to ourselves and loved ones. This mantra taps into the energies of the sun, moon, earth, and the Infinite Spirit to bring deep healing, according to 3ho.org. Check it out here.
I also started reading for The Universe Has Your Backfor the third time after Gabby announced the ebook offer for .99 cents until May 21st! (Get it here!) I need this book now, right now. I needed to re-learn to co-create with the Universe as I had in the past. I was starting to feel overwhelmed with all that I have going on with my book, Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training, and my Alanon program. I also just started EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. A lot of healing going on, which also can mean a lot of stuff coming up and temporarily messing with my purpose. If you haven't read The Universe Has Your Back, you should. One of the first Universal Lessons in the books is: "When we surrender our will to the power of the Universe, we receive miracles." I want a miracle.
I decided to set up some new social media parameters for myself. I am going to outline them here so I can set the intention in front of the millions who read this blog! ( hahaha just kidding, the hundreds who read this blog.)
Tara's Social Media Parameters
1. No more sleeping with my iPhone... or iPad...or Mac for that matter. No Apple products of any kind in my room! When I engage in screen time before bed, it stimulates my eyes so much that I am unable to fall asleep. Here is a quote I found from the Huffington Post. “We know from previous work that light from screens in the evening alters sleepiness and alertness, and suppresses melatonin levels,” Dr. Anne-Marie Chang, an associate neuroscientist in BWH’s Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders who was a co-author on the study, told The Huffington Post via email. “This study shows comprehensive results of a direct comparison between reading with a light-emitting device and reading a printed book and the consequences on sleep.”
2. I am going to only post every other day unless there is something totally newsworthy like a Unicorn sighting, which could happen! Fewer posts, means less time with my eyeballs plugged to the screen monitoring how many likes I get. Listen. I know I post good stuff. I put a lot of time and heart into the creation of my memes. The right people will find me. I am going to trust the Universe on this one.
3. Hmmmm I hate even to admit I do this, but no more social media'ing and walking at the same time. Pedestrian injuries due to cell phone use are up 35 percent since 2010, according to federal emergency room data reviewed by Stateline, and some researchers blame at least 10 percent of the 78,000 pedestrian injuries in the U.S. in 2012 on mobile device distraction. The federal Fatality Analysis Reporting system attributes about a half-dozen pedestrians deaths a year to “portable electronic devices,” including phones and music players.
I might even decide to do the social media detox every couple of months for a few days; it was just that good for my soul. I feel insane saying that, as this is my business, but I feel it makes me that much better, and more available and present to my clients when they need me. So, in honor of my clients needing me, (hahaha) I am offering specials on my social media coaching packages until 5/23. See here for details.
If you have considered quitting social media just for a bit, I highly recommend it! Baby steps, if you can only do a day, then do it! Or maybe you can only do a few hours. When you come back you will be refreshed and renewed and ready to be at one with the Instagram algorithms. Your business won't suffer, and I would even go as far as to safely say that it might even excel! You will have so much Namaste that you may even surrender the idea that the more likes and followers the better person you are. Believe me; you are likable no matter how many hearts are next to your post, even if it's a magical angel number like 44 or 111.
Ps, if you haven't watch Pastor John Gray yet on Oprah's Super Soul Sessions, do it!!! Watch it here.
